One Room Challenge Week 5 - Down To The Wire

Wow guys!  It is Week 5 of the One Room Challenge.  I feel pretty good about where I am and panicked at the same time.

Got a couple deliveries coming in hot. The shelf, light fixtures and headboard installed.

My DIY project this week was to makeover the little stool I got at the thrift store.

This stool will always be the purchase that got me my first Senior Discount!  No really.

Little did I know that Tuesday’s you get a 20% discount if you’re over 55 at Community Hospice Hope Chest. The clerk was looking at me, trying to decide whether to take the risk and ask. Since I didn’t know there was a discount on Tuesdays, I thought she just really liked the lip color I had on as she studied me. But then she went there...very politely. I blurted out “yes” without thinking when she said, “you’re not 55 are you?” Yes. Yes I am! Loud and proud. So with my senior discount, my little stool cost a whopping $8! 😉 This is a high five when I’m trying to do this project on a budget.

All the discounts please.

To give this stool a makeover I sanded a million layers of paint down.

I used a white spray paint with primer and gave it two coats.

Using a trash bag, I taped off the legs of this cutie and sprayed them gold to create that dip dyed look.

I flipped it and touched up a couple spots but it was a really quick project.

She’s feeling so much better about herself!

Next week is the big reveal for all the One Room Challenge participants. So its crunch time. The end game. Down to the wire. All the cliches. Agh… I want to show you so many things but all will be revealed for this little Guest Room makeover next Thursday.

Here we go…

One Room Challenge Spring 2019 - Week 3

Week 3…its here already. Tick tock…

This week has been a lot of behind the scenes and waiting for things to be delivered. Cue the Jeopardy theme music. Do do do do do do do…did you just sing that in your head?

Walls are painted and the stencil arrived yesterday. It is so cool and I can’t wait to start applying it. We picked up the headboard, by we, I mean John since it wouldn’t fit in my car and then Target almost wouldn’t let him pick it up because he wasn’t listed as an alternate. That went over really well…

I’m re-purposing the bookshelf to update it a little to be more midcentury style.

Here are a couple of my inspiration pics

This bookcase has been a part of our home for awhile now…like years and years. It was purchased at a local furniture store and is real honest to goodness wood and actually has a twin that lives at our youngest daughters apartment. It is one nice bookcase that with a little love, can keep living its best life!

I love that the inspiration pics above combine paint and the actual wood.

So here’s whats up in the next week…

  1. Stencil Navy wall

  2. Install shelf above headboard

  3. Install headboard

  4. Install sconces above headboard

Thanks for sticking with me so far…keep tuning in and also make sure to check out the Featured Designer Projects here and the other Guest Design Projects here.

I'm Doing The One Room Challenge! Guest Room Makeover

Hey there and welcome to the craziness!

Maybe you’ve never heard of the One Room Challenge but for the next 6 weeks I hope you’ll follow along with me on this journey of making over what used to be our youngest daughters’ room into a dedicated guest room.

We are empty nesters and I have wanted to do something to the front bedroom for awhile now but also had that mom guilt of changing it too much because, I mean, she does still come home occasionally and reclaims it (there may or may not still be Little Mermaid items she collected on the bookcase ) but to be honest, she has lived in SoCal for 3+ years and we have two other kids and their families that come home and visit, plus friends so it is waaayyyy past time for a makeover. I have been an Interior Designer for 14 years in our little part of Northern California. You can learn more right up there on my About page.

Here’s a little peek at where I’m headed

Here’s a little peek at where I’m headed

The One Room Challenge sponsors this event (it’s not a contest) twice a year, in the Spring and Fall. They partner with Better Homes and Gardens Media and feature 20 Designer/Bloggers each round. But…what I didn’t know until last week, was that you can participate as a Guest…which is what I’m doing! I’m both excited and nervous to be participating. Here is the information from their website to give you a little more info:

The One Room Challenge™, currently in its fifteenth season, is a widely anticipated biannual event every April and October. Each round, twenty design influencers are selected to take the challenge, as Featured Designers, and transform a space. Every Wednesday, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over six weekly posts.

In addition to following along, everyone with a blog or Instagram account, is welcome to join the fun as a Guest Participant by linking their own room transformations up during the six weeks. Each Thursday, the internet and social media are flooded with interior design inspiration, ideas, and encouragement.

To date, more than 3,000 rooms have been transformed through the One Room Challenge™. The event, and many of the spaces, have been recognized and featured.

Fun right?

So here’s what I’m thinking about my design. My style is always evolving and currently I tend toward a little mid century modern, boho, with some transitional thrown in for good measure. I’m doing this on a budget, with some items we already have and some new to add in the mix. This is my plan of attack…

  • New Paint

  • New Bedding and Rug

  • New Lighting

  • Book Shelf Update

  • Window Covering Update

  • DIY Art

  • Closet Door Makeover

I’ve got six weeks to get ‘er done and the big reveal is on May 9th! Did I mention that I also co-chair a big High Tea Event that is Saturday May 11th…that’s what I meant about welcome to the craziness. Here we go!
